HOUSTON - The University of Houston Department of Athletics continued to receive academic recognition with 160 student-athletes named to the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team for the 2014-15 school year, the league announced Thursday.

Student-athletes from all 17 Houston sport programs earned All-Academic honors for their hard work in the classroom.

For the fourth time in his career, forward Mikhail McLean was named to a conference All-Academic Team. The Nassau, Bahamas, native earned his bachelor's degree in health promotions from UH in 2013 and majored in health education in graduate school during the 2014-15 season. He is scheduled to receive his master's degree in May 2016.

Baseball and Men's Track and Field had the most All-Academic Team selections (24) among Houston sport programs. Men's Cross Country led all sport programs with 88.9 percent of its student-athletes named to the conference list followed by Women's Cross Country with 81.8 percent.

Each institution may annually submit an unlimited number of nominations. All nominees must have participated in an American-sponsored sport, attained a minimum GPA of 3.0 for the preceding academic year and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work with a total of 18-semester or 27-quarter credits.

Houston Athletics has continued to shine in academics over the last year. The Men's Cross Country and Women's Tennis teams were awarded the NCAA's Public Recognition Award earlier this spring. This award is given to teams in the top 10 percent of their respective sports and was the third consecutive year for Women's Tennis to receive the honor.

Houston student-athletes across all 17 sport programs combined for the best spring semester grade point average in UH history, 2.92, the best cumulative GPA following a spring semester, 2.92, and the most hours ever passed per student-athlete in the spring semester with an average of 13.88 hours per student-athlete.

In addition to the three records, 73 Houston student-athletes earned Dean's List honors by recording a 3.50 GPA or better while passing 12 or more hours.

Nine Houston programs achieved APR scores over the national average of 978 while all 17 exceeded scores over the NCAA benchmark rate of 930 points, with 13 programs topping the rate by more than 20 points.

Three programs led The American Athletic Conference in their respective APR sport categories - Men's Cross Country, Women's Golf and Tennis.

Men's Golf star Kyle Pilgrim was honored Wednesday as one of 22 student-athletes to receive the 2014-15 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award from The American. The selections were made by the conference's Academic Affairs Committee.

In the classroom, Pilgrim recorded a 3.91 grade-point average in accounting in the Honors College and received his bachelor's degree in May.
