HOUSTON - University of Houston Men's Basketball team members will participate in a community service project this weekend as part of September National Day of Remembrance and Service.

The Cougars will honor first responders with community action on Saturday morning around Tidwell Community Center (9720 Spaulding St., Houston 77016). Head coach James Dickey, his staff and student-athletes will assist in distributing fire alarms in a high-risk fire area.

The Cougars will be part of nearly 200 volunteers canvassing the area door-to-door to reduce the risk of fire-related injuries and death in the city of Houston.

This will be only the most recent community service project by the Cougars. In previous years, Houston has read to elementary school students, unloaded 22 tons of pumpkins for a local church's annual fall fundraiser and assisted in local residents' Extreme Home Makeover.

The Cougars open their season at 7 p.m., Nov. 5 when they meet St. Thomas in an exhibition game. The team opens the regular season at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 8, against Texas State with both games inside Hofheinz Pavilion.

    SEASON TICKETS
Season-tickets for the Cougars' 2013-14 season are now on sale inside the Athletics Ticket Office. Season tickets include 17 regular-season home games inside Hofheinz Pavilion as well as both games of the Lone Star Showcase on Dec. 21 inside the Toyota Center.

That doubleheader features the Cougars meeting crosstown rival Rice at 3:30 p.m., with Oklahoma facing Texas A&M at 6 p.m., Dec. 21.
