HOUSTON - Head Coach Kelvin Sampson and the University of Houston Men’s Basketball program will begin the 2016-17 campaign with their annual Tip-Off Dinner on Nov. 2, and fans are invited to attend.
Houston great and former NBA star player and coach Don Chaney will be recognized at this year’s event to be held at the Hilton University of Houston on the UH campus. A reception begins at 5:30 p.m., Nov. 2, with dinner to follow at 6:30 p.m.
Sampson will introduce the members of the Cougars’ 2016-17 team and offer insights into what fans can expect. Houston was one of only two teams in the league, which defeated every American Athletic Conference rival at least once during the regular season.
With only the 15th 22-win season in school history, the Cougars boasted a 9-game improvement from their 13-19 mark in 2014-15. That total ranked as the 13th-highest improvement among 351 NCAA Division I schools in 2015-16.
TICKETS and TABLES AVAILABLE
Tables with 10 dinner tickets are available for $1,000 with individual tickets selling for $100.
Fans can sign up for the Tip-Off Dinner by clicking here, filling out the form and returning to the Men’s Basketball Office. For more information about the Tip-Off Dinner, fans can email UHMensbasketball@uh.edu or call 713-743-9742.
ABOUT DON CHANEY
As a three-year letterman from 1965 to 1968, Chaney led the Cougars to a combined 81-12 record with back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Final Four in 1967 and 1968, the first of five in school history.
He joined with Houston legend Elvin Hayes as the first African-American men’s basketball student-athletes in school history and among the first in the region.
Chaney, who hails from Baton Rouge, La., scored 1,133 points during his career and was a two-time USBWA and NABC All-District selection.
Following his collegiate career, Chaney was taken by the Boston Celtics with the No. 12 overall pick in the 1968 NBA Draft. He was a part of two NBA world championship teams with the Celtics in 1969 and 1974 and also competed with the Los Angeles Lakers and St. Louis Spirits of the American Basketball Association during his playing career.
When his playing days were finished, Chaney moved into the NBA coaching ranks. He compiled 831 wins from the sidelines in 12 years with the Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets, Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks.
Leading the Houston Rockets to a 52-30 record in 1990-91, Chaney was named the NBA Coach of the Year.
Season tickets for 16 regular-season games begin for as low as $80 during the final season inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
Fans will be able to purchase new season tickets beginning in Monday online at UHCougars.com/tickets or by calling the Athletics Ticket Office at 713-GO-COOGS (462-6647).
FERTITTA CENTER COMING SOON
Thanks to a generous $20 million gift from University of Houston Board of Regents Chairman Tilman J. Fertitta and his family, the Cougars will compete in the Fertitta Center during the 2018-19 season.
Following the 2016-17 season, Hofheinz Pavilion will undergo a $60 million renovation. The Fertitta Center will feature a premium club area and a courtside club. The reconfigured bowl will move mid-court seating locations closer to game action with floor-level seating opposite the team benches for UH students.
Renovations include a new audio system, sports lighting and video boards as well as new concession stands and expanded restrooms. The facility’s exterior also will be refreshed.
