Basketball Takes Step Toward Practice Facility Construction

HOUSTON - Administrators from the University of Houston have taken the next step in the construction of the Men's and Women's Basketball programs' new practice facility, the school announced Wednesday.

Following approval from the Board of Regents, officials from the University's Facilities Planning and Construction Department recently issued a Request for Qualifications for Architectural and Engineering Services.

Architectural and engineering firms are now invited to submit their credentials for working on the project. After reviewing all applicants, University administrators are expected to officially hire the design firm by the end of the year.

"We are excited to take this first step in the construction of our new Men's and Women's Basketball Practice Facility," Houston Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Mack Rhoades said. "Our coaches and our student-athletes in all our sports programs deserve the very best facilities, and we are pleased to continue that mission for our Men's and Women's Basketball programs and their student-athletes."

"This project is tremendous for both the Men's and Women's Basketball teams," said Men's head coach James Dickey, who begins his fourth season with the Cougars. "As we work to recruit the top student-athletes to join our program, it is exciting to add this first-class practice facility. This will be an outstanding addition to Hofheinz Pavilion and will be an asset to our program and our University in the years to come."

"I knew from the day I was hired Dr. Renu Khator and Mack Rhoades were going to get this project done. I knew they would give us the resources and tools we needed to consistently compete to be a top-25 team," said Women's head coach Todd Buchanan, who is in his fourth year as head coach with the Cougars. "When you have this type of facility, it does nothing but bolster your recruiting. This showcases the University of Houston for what it really is, a first-class, Tier-One university."

The new facility will be located near the intersection of Cullen Boulevard and Holman Street on the UH campus.

The new practice facility will include two practice courts, office space for both Men's and Women's teams and team support areas. A timeline for completion of the project is still pending.

The new practice facility will be the first part in the Hofheinz Pavilion project. By completing the practice facility first, the Men's and Women's Basketball teams will have sites in which to practice while the game venue is renovated.

This is only the latest facility improvement for Houston Athletics under Rhoades' tenure. Construction on the new Houston Football Stadium continues on the site of the old Robertson Stadium near Hofheinz Pavilion and will be completed in time for the 2014 football season opener.

Prior to football's training camp, the team's practice fields were reconfigured with a new turf field installed.

In August 2012, the Dave Williams Golf Academy at Redstone Golf Club officially opened. As the home of Houston Men's and Women's golf, this facility provides the latest technology in the Cougars' home away from home.
