HOUSTON - The University of Houston Men's and Women's Basketball teams moved a step closer to their 2013-14 season openers as they celebrated Cougar Red Madness on Friday evening inside the Athletics/Alumni Center.

Men's Head Coach James Dickey and Women's Head Coach Todd Buchanan introduced their respective teams and coaching and support staffs to fans. After the introductions, the teams competed in friendly games against one another.

In the 3-Point Shooting Contest, sophomore guard L.J. Rose regained the trophy for the Men's Team with a 14-8 victory against senior forward Marissa Ashton. The Houston native totaled 14 points in back-to-back rounds to lead the Cougars and even series against the Women's Team.

In the Women's 2-Ball competition, sophomore guard Jessieka Palmer's team posted 15 points to take a 1-point win against sophomore guard Bianca Winslow's team.

In the final competition of the night, junior forward TaShawn Thomas used a thunderous, between-his-legs dunk in the finals on the way to 47 points and the title against defending title holder and sophomore guard Danuel House. The two All-Conference performers edged out redshirt freshman forward Danrad Knowles and junior forward Mikhail McLean in the first round to advance to the title competition.

ABOUT THE MEN'S TEAM
Nine lettermen and three starters return for the Cougars in 2013-14 after posting a 20-win season and advancing to the College Basketball Invitational Quarterfinals a year ago.

Competing in the new American Athletic Conference for the first time, the Cougars will play 17 home games inside historic Hofheinz Pavilion this season, including games against perennial powers UConn, Cincinnati, Temple, Memphis and defending national champion Louisville.

Houston faces each member of the 10-team conference in home-and-away contests, beginning 8 p.m., Dec. 31 against UConn inside Hofheinz Pavilion. Each of the Cougars' 18 American Athletic Conference regular-season games will be televised nationally on the ESPN family of networks or CBS Sports Network.

The season opens at 7 p.m., Nov. 5 with an exhibition contest against St. Thomas. The regular season tips off at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 8 against Texas State with both games inside Hofheinz Pavilion.

TaShawn Thomas posted 16.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game to rank among the Conference USA's top-five leaders in both categories and was named to the league's First Team and All-Defensive squad. After averaging 12.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game during his inaugural collegiate season, House was an easy selection as the C-USA Freshman of the Year.

ABOUT THE WOMEN'S TEAM
The Cougars return four of five starters and nine of 10 letterwinners from last year's team, accounting for 74 percent of last season's total scoring.

Despite playing with five freshmen and nine total newcomers last season, Todd Buchanan's rebuilt squad won 10 more contests than the previous year and knocked off the top two teams in Conference USA during the regular season.

Sophomore forward Marche' Amerson was named to the C-USA All-Freshman squad after ranking second on the team with 9.1 points per game and 10.1 points per contest in league play. Amerson set a freshman record by starting in all 30 contests and placed in the top 10 of six other freshman records.

Yasmeen Thompson returns for her senior year after making a splash in her first season at Houston, where she led C-USA and ranked 10th all-time in program history in field-goal percentage (.553) while adding 8.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest.

The Cougars' schedule is highlighted by 15 home games and 14 contests against postseason squads from a year ago, including defending national champion UConn and national runner-up Louisville.

Houston opens the 2013-14 season on Nov. 8 against Mississippi State inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
