Men's Basketball Places Two on Preseason All-Conference USA Team

HOUSTON - With a month before the start of play, University of Houston senior guards Aubrey Coleman and Kelvin Lewis were named to the Preseason All-Conference USA Team, the league office announced Thursday afternoon.

Coleman made an immediate impact in his first season with the Cougars a year ago. Averaging 19.4 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, he was the only player to rank among the league's top-four leaders in both categories.

The Houston native posted three 30-point games, including a career-high 38 points at C-USA rival Marshall.

For his impressive efforts, he was named the C-USA Newcomer of the Year and earned places on the USBWA and NABC All-District First Teams. In addition, he was twice named the C-USA Player of the Week and was name the league's Rookie of the Week five times.

Lewis averaged 18.0 points and ranked among the league leaders with 93 3-pointers. He posted a pair of 30-point games, including a career-best 35 points at Arizona midway through the season.

A member of the All-Conference USA Third Team, Lewis regularly was called upon to guard Cougar opponents' leading backcourt players. After posting several spectacular performances against the league's premier offensive players, he also earned a place on the league's All-Defensive Team.

Coleman and Lewis, who are the league's top-two returning scorers, were joined on the preseason team by Tulsa center Jerome Jordan, Tulsa guard Ben Uzoh and UTEP forward Arnett Moultrie.

Jordan was recognized as the league's Preseason Player of the Year.

The Cougars take their first steps of the 2009-10 season with the start of practice Friday evening inside Hofheinz Pavilion. UH is scheduled to work out for about two hours, beginning at 7:30 p.m., Friday.

Fans should note that Friday's practice is closed to the public.
