Hendrix Scholarship Endowment Created

Oct. 19, 2016

HOUSTON - The University of Houston Athletics Department and the Houston Cougar Foundation (HCF) are proud to announce the establishment of the Lois and L.D. Hendrix Scholarship through the creation of the Lois and L.D. Hendrix Scholarship Endowment.

Managed by HCF, the endowment will enable Houston Athletics to award scholarship funding for a Houston Men’s Basketball student-athlete. The recipient will be selected by members of the Athletics Department Scholarship Committee.

Hendrix lettered for the Cougars from 1947 to 1951 under Head Coach Alden Pasche and became the program’s first 1,000-point scorer in 1951. The Honey Island, Texas, native finished with 1,026 points in 89 games during his collegiate career and served as team captain as a senior for the 1950-51 campaign.

He averaged a career-best 13.3 points per game as a junior in 1949-50, leading the Cougars to a 16-7 overall record and Gulf Coast Conference championship with a 6-0 mark in league play.

Hendrix met his wife, Lois, while both were students at the University of Houston and married in 1950. After Hendrix received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UH, he continued playing basketball for the Phillips 66ers.

The Hendrixes are grateful to the University of Houston for the education and opportunities they received which set them on the path to a productive life together. By establishing this scholarship, they hope to help others as they have been helped.
