HOUSTON - University of Houston basketball fans received their first glimpses of their favorite teams in action Wednesday night during the Houston Hardwood Tip-Off presented by Chipotle.

Competing in the Cougar Den at the Athletics/Alumni Center, the Cougar men's and women's basketball teams were introduced to fans with some friendly competitions thrown in.

Men's head coach James Dickey and women's head coach Todd Buchanan introduced their coaching and support staffs and thanked all the fans for coming out to the event.

Robert Dale Morgan, president and executive director of the Houston Local Organizing Committee for the 2011 NCAA Final Four, spoke to the crowd and presented a commemorative basketball to Dickey. Houston, along with Rice, will serve as co-hosts at the 2011 NCAA Final Four at Reliant Stadium.

In the 2-Ball competition, four two-person teams consisting of a male and female student-athlete from each team squared off. Student-athletes alternated shots from various points on the court with the farther shots earning more points for their teams.

In the championship round, sophomore forward Kirk Van Slyke and senior guard Porsche Landry used some hot long-range shooting to score 35 points, nine ahead of runners up Adam Brown and reigning Conference USA Player of the Year Courtney Taylor.

After performances from the Spirit of Houston, Houston Cheer and the Cougar Dolls, members of the men's team took part in a dunk contest. A pair of newcomers advanced to the championship round with junior guard Darian Thibodeaux and freshman forward Alandise Harris scoring highest.

Thibodeaux and Harris battled to a tie in the first round of the championship before Thibodeaux iced the win with 35 points on his final dunk of the night.

Houston junior wide receiver Tyron Carrier, Cougar legends Chandi Jones and Michael Young and Houston student body president Prince Wilson served as celebrity judges in the dunk contest.

The fun-filled event wrapped up with an autograph session featuring both teams. Fans lined up to have posters signed by student-athletes from both teams
