HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Men's Basketball program takes its first step of the 2016-17 season when the Cougars play host to UNC Pembroke at 7 p.m., Saturday, inside Hofheinz Pavilion in a game presented by Maintenance Supply Headquarters.

Saturday's game will be the first of two exhibition contests for the Cougars this season. After facing Morgan State on Nov. 11 in the regular-season opener, Houston also meets Angelo State at 7 p.m., Nov. 16 with both games inside Hofheinz Pavilion.

The Cougars, who finished 22-10 and competed in the postseason NIT for the first time in a decade a year ago, were picked to finish fourth in the American Athletic Conference Coaches Preseason Poll, only one point behind third-place SMU.

In addition, the Cougars put two student-athletes on the Preseason All-Conference Team with senior guard Damyean Dotson earning First-Team honors and junior guard Rob Gray Jr. being named to the Second Team. Sophomore point guard Galen Robinson Jr. also returns after being named to the 2016 All-Rookie Team and becoming only the sixth freshman in school history to dish out 100+ assists in a single season.

Houston will compete in 18 home games in 2016-17 during the final season inside Hofheinz Pavilion. No. 18/16 UConn, No. 23/24 Rhode Island and rv/No. 25 Cincinnati are each ranked among the nation's top-25 leaders, while Harvard, Arkansas and SMU are receiving votes in at least one poll.

Following the 2016-17 season, renovations of $60 million will transfer Hofheinz Pavilion into the Fertitta Center, scheduled to open during the 2018-19 season. That project was made possible by a generous $20 million donation from UH System Board of Regents Chairman Tilman J. Fertitta and his family.

Fans traveling to Saturday's game should note that Interstate 45 in downtown Houston between Interstate 10 and US 59 will be closed all weekend.

Fans are encouraged to leave early and plan accordingly in dealing with traffic as construction continues.
