HOUSTON - Former Rice head coach Willis Wilson will join the University of Houston ISP Sports Network as an analyst for home games and postseason games during the 2008-09 season.
Wilson will join the Voice of the Cougars Tom Franklin throughout the season. All Cougar Men's Basketball games can be heard live on 790 AM The Sports Animal and on UHCougars.com.
"Willis Wilson is an outstanding choice to join the Houston ISP Sports Network. His extensive coaching background will give great insight to play on the floor and complement Tom Franklin's play-by-play call," UH director of athletics Dave Maggard said. "We are really delighted to have Willis join our team.
As the head coach at Rice from 1992 to 2008, Wilson helped lead the Owls to more than 200 victories during his tenure. He produced more than 25 professional players at Rice and was honored as the NABC District 9 Coach of the Year in 2004.
He currently is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Board of Directors and serves as chairman of the NABC All-America Committee.
"Willis has great insight into the Cougar program as a competitor across town for the last decade, and his knowledge of college basketball and Conference USA is what we were searching for," said Mike Kohler, general manager of the Houston ISP Sports Network.
Wilson makes his Cougar debut when UH opens its 2008-09 home schedule at 3 p.m., Nov. 15, against Western Kentucky at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Before the Cougars face the Hilltoppers, though, UH opens its 2008-09 season at 3 p.m. (CST), Monday when it faces Georgia Southern during the first game of the Durham Regional of the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Cougars will face the winner or loser of the #8/5 Duke-Presbyterian game on Tuesday. With a win over Georgia Southern, the Cougars meet the Duke-Presbyterian winner at 8 p.m. (CST), Tuesday. With a loss to the Eagles, the Cougars face the Duke-Presbyterian loser at 5 p.m. (CST), Tuesday.
