HOUSTON - Fresh off a dominating win against Concordia in their line exhibition game, the University of Houston Men's Basketball team opens its 68th season of intercollegiate plays when it plays host to Florida A&M at noon, Friday, inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
Fans should note the early starting time for Friday's game due to the Athletics Hall of Honor gala later that evening. The game was moved up to accommodate fans during a busy Homecoming weekend on the UH campus.
The Cougars enter their season opener following an impressive 108-55 win against Concordia on Tuesday night inside Hofheinz Pavilion. Senior forward Leon Gibson led six Cougars in double digits with 23 points, while newcomers Danuel House and Brandon Morris tallied 13 points apiece.
Sophomore forward TaShawn Thomas did a little of everything in the win against the Tornados. The Killeen, Texas, native posted 12 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the field and fell only one rebound shy of a double-double. Thomas, who was a 2012 member of the Conference USA All-Freshman Team, also added six assists with two blocked shots and two steals without a turnover in 22 minutes.
Freshman forward Valentine Izundu added 12 points, hitting all six of his field goal attempts, with eight of those coming during a 69-second stretch late in the first half. Redshirt freshman Jherrod Stiggers - who also donned the Scarlet and White for the first time - posted 10 points, thanks in part to a pair of 3-pointers.
