HOUSTON -- Fresh off a big exhibition win, the University of Houston Men's Basketball team opens the 2017-18 season when it plays host to McNeese at 7 p.m., Friday, inside Health & PE Arena on the campus of Texas Southern University in a game presented by Maintenance Supply Headquarters.
The Cougars enter their opener on the heels of an impressive 97-80 win over Angelo State on Sunday afternoon. Houston scored the game's first nine points and built as much as a 29-point lead in the second half.
Against the Rams, senior forward Nura Zanna and sophomore center Chris Harris Jr. led five Cougars in double digits with 13 points apiece. Freshman forward Fabian White Jr. added a game-high nine rebounds, while guards Corey Davis Jr. and Rob Gray topped the Cougars with five assists apiece.
The Cougars are competing in their fourth season under Head Coach Kelvin Sampson, who has posted a 22-2 all-time record in season openers during his career, including 3-0 mark during his tenure in Houston. His teams have won by an average of nearly 23.0 points per game in season openers during his career.
Fans can purchase tickets for 15 regular-season games inside H&PE Arena on the campus of Texas Southern begin as low as $100. Fans can purchase season tickets online at UHCougars.com/tickets or by calling the Athletics Ticket Office at 713-GO-COOGS (462-6647).
Fans are encouraged to use the FREE parking shuttle to H&PE Arena during the 2017-18 season. Shuttle service begins at 5:30 p.m., Friday, in Lot 12A near Gate 3 of the TDECU Stadium parking lot.
Shuttle return service begins immediately after the game and will run for one hour.
Fans can park for $5 while spaces are available in the TSU garage adjacent to H&PE Arena. Fans wishing to pay for parking should enter the garage off Blodgett Street.
SEASON OPENER HISTORY
Cougars will compete in their 73rd season opener on Friday night.
Houston has posted a 52-20 record in season openers during its history.
Cougars have won their last eight and 12 of their last 13 season openers... Only a 65-63 loss to Georgia Southern on the first day of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer in Durham, N.C., prevents a longer streak.
Houston has won handily in recent history, winning their last eight season openers by an average of 21.9 points per game... That includes back-to-back 41-point wins against Prairie View A&M (110-69, Nov. 18, 2015) and Morgan State (93-52, Nov. 11, 2016).

Following Friday's season opener, the Cougars return to action when they compete at the Paradise Jam, hosted by Liberty on Nov. 17-19 inside the Vines Center in Lynchburg, Va.
Tournament was originally scheduled to be played in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, but damage from Hurricanes Irma and Maria forced event to be moved.
Cougars open tournament at 1:30 p.m. (CST), Nov. 17 against Drexel.
From there, will play winner-loser of Mercer/Liberty at 11 a.m., or 5 p.m., Nov. 18.
Tournament wraps up at on Nov. 19.
Cougars return to Houston to play host to UIW at 7 p.m., Nov. 25, inside H&PE Arena.
