HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Men's Basketball program opens its 72nd year of competition when it tips off at 7 p.m., Friday, against Morgan State inside Hofheinz Pavilion.

The Cougars enter their regular-season opener on the heels of a dominating 94-67 win over UNC Pembroke -- alma mater of Head Coach Kelvin Sampson -- on Saturday night inside Hofheinz Pavilion.

Senior guard Damyean Dotson led all players with 23 points, thanks to 7-of-10 shooting from the field, including 5-of-7 from behind the arc. The Houston native, Yates High School product and 2016 Preseason All-American Athletic Conference First-Team selection also grabbed eight rebounds in the win.

Junior guard and Preseason Second-Team honoree Rob Gray added 22 points with three treys and 9-of-10 shooting from the free throw line, while junior forward Devin Davis scored 16 points with a game-high nine rebounds in his first game wearing the Scarlet and White.

The Cougars have posted a 51-20 record during their season openers.

In addition, the Cougars have won their last seven and 11 of their last 12 openers. Only a 65-63 setback to Georgia Southern on Nov. 10, 2008, during the first day of the 2K Sports Classic benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium prevents a longer winning streak.

Head Coach Kelvin Sampson and his teams have posted a 21-2 all-time record in season openers during his career. He has won each of his last seven openers as a collegiate head coach and has won season-opening games by an average of 22.4 points per game.

University of Houston students receive FREE Homecoming rally towels while supplies last. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., Friday.

At halftime, fans will not want to leave their seats as the Xpogo Stunt Team performs. To see more of this exciting group, fans should click here.

Like the Cougars, Morgan State opens its 2016-17 season on Friday night.

The Bears posted a 9-22 overall record with a 6-10 mark in Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference play in 2015-16. Morgan State tied for ninth with Howard and Coppin State in final league standings.

Junior forward Phillip Carr returns as the Bears' leading scorer after averaging 10.5 points a year ago and topped the team with 6.9 rebounds per contest. Sophomore guard Martez Cameron enters Friday's game as the team's returning assist leader after averaging 2.1 assists per game.

Head Coach Todd Bozeman is in his 11th year at Morgan State and his 15th season as a collegiate head coach. He has compiled a 193-222 career record and is 158-160 during his Morgan State tenure.

Bozeman previously built a 35-62 record at California (1992-96).

He is 0-1 against Houston during his career. His 2014-15 Morgan State team dropped a 72-57 decision inside Hofheinz Pavilion on Nov. 22, 2014.

Following Friday's game, the Cougars compete in their second exhibition contest of the year when they meet Angelo State at 7 p.m., Nov. 16, inside Hofheinz Pavilion.

From there, the Cougars hit the road for the first time when they compete at the Gulf Coast Showcase inside Germain Arena in Estero, Fla.

The Cougars open that tournament at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 21, before facing the winner/loser of Kent State/South Dakota on Nov. 22. Houston closes out the regular-season tournament on Nov. 23 at a time to be determined.
