HOUSTON -- Atascocita High School forward Fabian White Jr. became the newest member of the University of Houston Men's Basketball program after signing a National Letter of Intent, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson announced Thursday.
White, who stands 6-foot-7 and weighs 210 pounds, chose Houston over Arkansas, TCU, SMU, Boise State, Florida Gulf Coast and UTSA. He will compete as a freshman during the 2017-18 season with four years of eligibility remaining.
"Fabian is one of the best high school players in the state of Texas and was a must-get for us when we got here. We tagged Fabian early. He is very athletic but tough," Sampson said. "He may be more of an inside player right now, but we believe we can develop him out to the 3-point line because he has a great shooting stroke. He can score. You throw him the ball around 10-15 feet from the basket, and he is going to find a way to put it in.
As a junior at Atascocita High School in 2015-16 under Head Coach David Martinez, White averaged 18.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game and led his team to a 38-0 record before falling to DeSoto High School in the Class 6A State Championship.
In the state tournament, White posted game highs of 28 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Eagles past Westlake High School in a regional final. He totaled 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field to lead Atascocita to a win over Houston Math Science & Technology and a berth in the state championship game.
"Fabian wants to be at UH so his family can watch him play, and he wants to win a championship because he believes in Coach Sampson. He brings a winning attitude and works extremely hard every day. He is very good around the basketball and continues to develop his perimeter game," Martinez said. "He is the kind of young man you want your daughter to date. I can't say enough good things about Fabian."
