HOUSTON - University of Houston Men's Basketball forward Danrad Knowles has been cleared to compete by the NCAA Eligibility Center and will be immediately eligible for the 2013-14 season, head coach James Dickey announced Tuesday afternoon.

Knowles, who is better known by his nickname "Chicken", will make his Houston debut at 7 p.m., Thursday, when the Cougars play host to UTSA inside Hofheinz Pavilion.

"We are grateful that the NCAA has ruled quickly in Danrad's case, and we are excited that he has been allowed to compete this season," Dickey said. "I appreciate all the efforts of our administration and compliance department throughout this process. As excited as our coaches, players and fans will be with this news, no one will be more excited to hit the court than Danrad on Thursday night."

Knowles sat out competition during the entire 2012-13 season while attending classes at UH-Downtown. This season, he has been attending classes since the start of the fall semester and worked out daily with the Cougars since practice began Oct. 4.

A native of Nassau, Bahamas, Knowles competed in the Homeschool Christian Youth Association from 2010-2012 before signing with the Cougars. As a senior in 2011-12, he received the Maravich Award as the nation's top HomeSchool student-athlete and was ranked among the top 60 players by national scouting organizations.

Thursday's game can be seen live on ESPN3 with Dave Raymond calling the action and former Houston great Reid Gettys providing analysis. It also can be heard live on 950 AM KPRC with Matt Thomas calling the action and Basketball Hall of Famer Elvin Hayes adding analysis.
