MURRAY, Ky. - After summer workouts, more than a month of team practice and an exhibition game, the University of Houston Men's Basketball program officially tips off the 2014-15 season when it meets Murray State around 7:30 p.m., Friday, inside the CFSB Center.

While the game is scheduled for 7 p.m., Friday, fans should note that the Cougars will be part of a doubleheader with the Racers' Women Team, which meets Ohio earlier in the day. With 25 minutes scheduled between games, Houston fans should expect the Cougars to tip off around 7:25 p.m., Friday.

A NEW ERA BEGINS
Friday's game will be the start of the Coach Kelvin Sampson Era. Sampson, who is the ninth head coach in program history, was introduced in April and has immediately made his impression on the program in a short time.

During a 25-year, head coaching career, Sampson has accumulated 500 wins while taking 13 teams to the NCAA Tournament. He was twice named a National Coach of the Year and led Oklahoma to the 2002 NCAA Final Four, six conference championships and 12 consecutive seasons with 20+ wins from 1996 to 2008.

ABOUT MURRAY STATE
Murray State enters Friday's season opener following a 74-42 win over Freed-Hardman on Nov. 6 inside the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky. In their lone exhibition game, the Racers outrebounded Freed-Hardman 55-44 and dished out 19 assists with only five turnovers in the game.

Senior forward Jarvis Williams led all players with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting with 12 rebounds and a pair of blocks. Sophomore guard Cameron Payne added 12 points with a pair of 3-pointers and 10 assists, while sophomore guard Justin Seymour came off the bench to score 11 points with four rebounds and two treys. Junior forward Jeffery Moss added 10 points with seven rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals in the win.

Murray State was picked first in the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll, voted on by the league's coaches and sports information directors. Payne was recognized as the league's Preseason Player of the Year.

Steve Prohm is in his fourth year as head coach at Murray State and overall. He has posted a 75-23 record during that time. He previously served as an assistant coach at Murray State (2006-11), Tulane (2005-06), Southeastern Louisiana (1999-05) and Centenary (1998-99).

LAST TIME OUT
The Cougars enter Friday's game on the heels of an impressive 108-83 win against North Alabama in an exhibition contest on Saturday. Against the Lions, Houston drained 17 3-pointers on only 32 attempts and saw six players score double-digit points.

If the game had been played in the regular season, the Cougars' 3-point explosion would have ranked as the fourth-highest total in Houston single-game history.

Junior guard Jherrod Stiggers and sophomore forward Danrad Knowles led the way for the Cougars with 20 points apiece. Junior point guard Cavon Baker enjoyed a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 assists, while junior guard LeRon Barnes added 19 points, six rebounds and four assists.

SEASON OPENER HISTORY
Houston owns a 49-20 all-time record in its season openers and has won nine of its last 10 openers. Only a 65-63 setback to Georgia Southern on Nov. 10 2008, during the first day of the 2K Sports Classic benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium prevents a longer winning streak.

Friday's game will be the first time that Houston has opened away from home since that Georgia Southern game. It also will be the program's first season opener on the road since a 102-99 win at Rhode Island on Nov. 13, 2006.

Sampson has posted a 19-2 all-time mark in season openers during his career. His teams have won their last five season openers and 18 of the last 19. Only a 68-62 loss to Alabama at the AT&T Wireless Classic in New York on Nov. 14, 2002, stops a 19-game winning streak.

UP NEXT
Following Friday's game, the Cougars return to Houston to play host to Morgan State inside Hofheinz Pavilion in the 2014-15 home opener.

That game will be part of a doubleheader with Houston Football, which meets Tulsa on Nov. 22. Times for the Football and Men's Basketball games will be announced Saturday evening.
