HOUSTON -- Mansfield Lake Ridge High school guard Mike Adewunmi will compete for the University of Houston Men's Basketball program in 2017-18 after recently signing a National Letter of Intent, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson announced Sunday.
Measuring 6-foot-6 and 190 pounds, Adewunmi will compete as a freshman and have four years of eligibility remaining in 2017-18. He chose Houston over Rice, Louisiana Tech, Boise State, North Texas, Utah State and Pepperdine
"Mike is going to develop into an outstanding player. His best basketball is way ahead of him," Sampson said. "Mike is big and strong and can get ahead of the ball in transition. He plays above the rim and has a chance to be an outstanding defender."
As a letterman for Head Coach Donte Wilson, Adewunmi was an All-District 14-5A selection as a junior during the 2015-16 season.
Adewunmi, whose last name is pronounced Add-Oo-Woon-Me, scored 17 points against John Tyler High School in an area playoff game.
"Mike is an all-around good kid and mature for his age. He is one of the most athletic kids I have ever coached," Wilson said. "Mike is a good-sized guard and able to defend all five positions for us at the high school level. He is athletic and strong and makes us look smart."
Adewunmi joins Saddleback Junior College Breaon Brady and Atascocita High School forward Fabian White Jr. as the newest member in the Cougars' signing class.
The Cougars compete in their second exhibition contest of the year when they meet Angelo State at 7 p.m., Nov. 16, inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
From there, the Cougars hit the road for the first time when they compete at the Gulf Coast Showcase inside Germain Arena in Estero, Fla.
The Cougars open that tournament at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 21, before facing the winner/loser of Kent State/South Dakota on Nov. 22. Houston closes out the regular-season tournament on Nov. 23 at a time to be determined.
