After posting two straight double-doubles to open the 2010-11 campaign, University of Houston senior forward Maurice McNeil was honored Monday as the Conference USA Player of the Week.
The New York City native helped propel the Cougars to their second 2-0 start since 1997-1998 by averaging 15.5 points and 12.5 rebounds during Houston's opening weekend of basketball.
Against Nicholls State on Friday, McNeil hit the game-winning shot with just seconds to spare in overtime to give the Cougars a 63-62 victory. He finished the night with 13 points on 4-of-4 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds. He also added three steals and three blocks in the game.
McNeil scored 19 points and recorded 12 rebounds for the Cougars in their 88-68 win against Alcorn State on Sunday. It was the eighth double-double of his career.
This was the first time McNeil has been honored as C-USA Player of the Week.
Memphis guard Antonio Barton was named the C-USA Rookie of the Week. Both players were selected by a media panel representing each conference member for games through Sunday.
The Cougars hit the road for their first away trip of the season. Houston meets Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La., at 7 p.m., Wednesday.
From there, the team returns to the friendly confines of Hofheinz Pavilion to play host to Northwestern Oklahoma State at 2 p.m., Saturday.
