With their 88-68 win against Alcorn State in Hofheinz Pavilion on Saturday, the Cougars improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2006-07 and only the second time since 1997-98.
The Cougars enter the game following an 88-68 win against Alcorn State last weekend in Houston. Houston used a 19-6 second-half to break open a close game and never looked back in winning its third straight game against the Braves by at least 20 points.
Senior forward Maurice McNeil opened the season with his second straight double-double with 19 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. After a 12-point, 13-rebound effort against Nicholls State in the season opener, McNeil was honored Monday as the Conference USA Player of the Week, the first such honor during his collegiate career.
McNeil leads the Cougars with 12.5 rebounds and ranks second with 15.5 points per game.
Senior guard Adam Brown posted a game-high 23 points in the win against Alcorn State, his second straight 20-point performance to open the season. The San Antonio, Texas, native leads the Cougars with 21.5 points per game.
Senior guard Zamal Nixon did a little of everything against the Braves, finishing with career highs of 10 assists and five steals while adding eight points and four rebounds. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native leads the Cougars with 7.5 assists per game.
