Nov. 17, 2008
GAME 4
HOUSTON -The University of Houston men's basketball team continues its three-game homestand when it plays host to Alcorn State at 7 p.m., Tuesday, inside Hofheinz Pavilion. The Cougars come into the game on the heels of a 73-64 win over 2008 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 participant Western Kentucky on Saturday. After trailing by 10 points at halftime, the Cougars erupted from the locker room to hit 48 percent of their shots and outscore the Hilltoppers by 19 points during the final 20 minutes. Junior guard Aubrey Coleman leads the Cougar offense with 15.7 points per game and tops all Cougar defenders with three steals per game. After helping lead the Cougars to a pair of wins last week, the Houston native was honored Monday as the Conference USA Co-Rookie of the Week. Senior center Marcus Cousin ranks third on the team with 14.0 points and tops all players with 9.7 rebounds per contest. Junior guard Kelvin Lewis is second on the squad with 14.3 points per game, while freshman point guard Desmond Wade is averaging 10.0 points and five assists per game. Tuesday's game will be the first time since 1988 that the Cougars will meet the Braves on the hardwood. The Cougars own a 2-0 lead in the all-time series, which began with a 94-84 win on March 11, 1981, during the NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional in Tulsa, Okla. In addition, the game will be the last time that Cougar fans have a chance to watch their team for nearly two weeks. The Cougars won't return to action until 7 p.m., Nov. 29, when they meet North Texas inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
Forward Jarvis Williams also finished with 15 points, while forward Anthony Ford and guard Jumane Reed added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Head coach Larry Smith is in his first season at Alcorn State.
