HOUSTON - Returning to his hometown and leading the Cougars to an impressive victory, University of Houston sophomore forward Alandise Harris was honored Tuesday as the Conference USA Player of the Week.
This was Harris' first career Player of the Week award. He was honored as C-USA Freshman of the Week in 2009-10.
This also marks the second straight week that a Cougar received a C-USA weekly honor. Forward TaShawn Thomas was honored last week as the league's Freshman of the Week.
Harris, a product of Little Rock's Central High, helped lead the Cougars to a 2-0 week with a home win against Utah Valley and a road win against Arkansas, giving Houston its first 3-0 start since the 2006-07 season.
In the team's first game away from Hofheinz Pavilion, Harris was the Cougars' second-leading scorer with 18 points, including 11 in the second half. With the Cougars clinging to a 78-72 lead late in the game, he slammed a missed shot home to push the lead back to eight points.
That play was featured as ESPN SportsCenter's No. 1 Play of the Day.
Harris went on to grab six rebounds and led the team with two blocked shots in 23 minutes while battling foul trouble. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Razorbacks and was the Cougars' first against the Hogs since March 3, 1988.
Earlier in the week, Harris posted a career-high 20 points with nine rebounds in a home win against Utah Valley.
Rice guard Dylan Ennis was honored as the C-USA Freshman of the Week.
