Houston - The University of Houston men's basketball team will try to win their seventh straight game and improve its record to 8-1 when the Cougars play host to the University of Toledo on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars enter the game coming off an 83-68 victory over Middle Tennessee State last Saturday nigh in Hofheinz Pavilion. Houston began its winning streak against Marist, and also beat Charleston, Texas Southern, Grambling State and Costal Carolina.
Toledo enters the game looking to snap a six-game losing streak after suffering a 78-52 loss at No. 11 Pittsburgh last Saturday. The Rockets have played against teams that own a combined 40-9 record this season. Toledo has had a winning record in nine of the last 10 seasons under head coach Stan Joplin. The Rockets have also won 10 or more Mid-America Conference games nine times during that span as well, including last year when Toledo won the West Division with a 14-2 mark.
HOUSTON VS. TOLEDO
Houston will be trying to even its series record against Toledo to 2-2 when the two teams meet Tuesday night. The Cougars won a 75-58 decision in Houston on Dec. 14, 1988. Toledo won the last meeting between the two schools, 62-60, in Toledo on Dec. 16, 1989. The Rockets also won the first meeting in the series, 80-74, on Dec. 27, 1985.
University of Houston interim President John Rudley played guard at Toledo from 1966-69. Dr. Rudley averaged 11.4 points in 72 games throughout his career and was a member of Toledo's 1967 NCAA Tournament team. He scored 13 points and pulled down three rebounds against Virginia Tech in the NCAA First Round game. He led the Rockets in free throw percentage with 67.9 percent (55-81) as a junior in 1967-68 and averaged 12.0 points per game that season. In his senior year, Dr. Rudley averaged 15.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest. The Rockets had a combined 52-21 record during his three-year career.
LOOKING AT THE COUGARS
Picked to tie UAB for second place in a poll of Conference USA coaches, Houston enters the Toledo game looking to improve its record to 6-0 in home games this season. The Cougars opened the season with a victory over Morehead State, and also have beaten Texas Southern, Grambling State, Coastal Carolina and Middle Tennessee In home games this season. The Cougars have won eight straight home games dating back to last year.
The Cougars are led by preseason All-Conference USA selection Robert McKiver, who is averaging 20.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.
Senior forward Dion Dowell averages 12.8 points per game and is the team's rebounding leader with an 8.4 average.
Senior point guard Lanny Smith leads the team in assists with 4.3 per game after handing out five assists against both Grambling State and Coastal Carolina. He sat out the Middle Tennessee game with the flu.
Freshman guard Brockeith Pane is averaging 15.3 points per game and has scored in double figures during seven games this season. He scored a career-high 26 points against Grambling State. Pane also led the Cougars with 20 points against Texas Southern.
