Sophomore forward TaShawn Thomas
Dec. 10, 2012
HOUSTON - After leading the University of Houston Men's Basketball team to a pair of wins, sophomore forward TaShawn Thomas was honored Monday afternoon as the Conference USA Player of the Week.
It was the first weekly honor for Thomas during his career. A year ago, he was named to the league's All-Freshman Team and was a two-time Freshman of the Week recipient.
Thomas averaged 21.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game to lead Houston to a road win against TCU and a home victory against Texas Southern. It was the Cougars' first-ever road win against a member of the Big 12 Conference.
Against the Horned Frogs, Thomas scored four of the Cougars' first six points as the team built a 10-0 lead and never looked back. As the game wound down, he finished with nine of the team's final 14 points to ice the win. He totaled 19 points and 12 rebounds for his team-leading fifth double-double this season and the 14th of his career.
Thomas recorded a career-high-tying 23 points and fell just one rebound shy of another double-double against Texas Southern on Saturday inside Hofheinz Pavilion. He converted an and-1 midway through overtime to give the Cougars a 72-66 lead and posted his fourth 20-point game this season.
Playing a career-high-tying 37 minutes, he teamed with sophomore guard Joseph Young to become the first Cougar teammates to score 20 points in game since Young and guard Jonathon Simmons accomplished the feat against Rogers State on Dec. 21, 2011.
This season, Thomas leads the with 17.6 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. He joins Tulane's Josh Davis as the only players to be ranked among the league's top-two leaders in both categories.
Memphis forward Shaq Goodwin was named the Freshman of the Week.
Thomas and the Cougars continue their season-long homestand when they meet Louisiana-Lafayette at 7 p.m., Saturday, inside Hofheinz Pavilion. From there, the team plays host to Chicago State (7 p.m., Dec. 22); Prairie View A&M (3 p.m., Dec. 29); Texas-Pan American (7 p.m., Jan. 3) and Conference USA-rival SMU (7 p.m., Jan. 9).
