Houston - University of Houston junior forward Dion Dowell has been named the Conference USA Men's Basketball Player of the Week. Dowell earned the award after being named to the All-Tournament Team at the 43rd annual Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic after averaging 20.3 points and 11.3 rebounds in three games.
He opened the tournament scoring 22 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in Houston's 68-46 victory over Charlotte last Thursday. He followed up with another double-double performance with 15 points and 11 rebounds against Creighton. He capped off the weekend scoring a career-high 24 points against Nebraska.
Dowell began his UH career on Dec. 17 at No. 10 Arizona, when he registered 12 points and six rebounds. He is the second Cougar to earn C-USA Player of the Week honors this season as teammate Robert McKiver won the award on Nov. 20.
