|Patrick Okafor recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds and led Houston to a 66-64 victory over Marquette.|
Houston jumped out to a 38-29 halftime lead as Williams score 15 of his points in the opening period. The Cougars extended their lead to 51-38 with 12:41 left before the Golden Eagles came charging back.
Marquette closed to within 65-64 with 48 seconds left as Cordell Henry made both of his free throws.
After Houston senior Chad Hendrick missed a jumper in the lane, Okafor grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled by Olouma Nnamaka with 26 seconds remaining.
Okafor missed his first free throw and Marquette head coach Tom Crean missed the free throw. Okafor came back and made the second to give the Cougars a 66-64 lead.
Marquette quickly came up court and tried to get Henry open for a three-point shot, but the Cougars would not give him an open look at the basket and Marquette was forced to call a second time out with 13 seconds remaining.
Then, the Golden Eagles worked the ball around the horn before senior guard Brian Wardle took a three-point shot from the top of the key. His shot missed and Williams knocked the rebound away from the basket as the horn sounded.
The victory improved Houston's record to 8-19 and 5-10 in C-USA play, while Marquette fell to 14-12 overall and 9-6 in C-USA action.
The victory was Houston's first regular season victory over Marquette since 1968 when the Cougars beat the Golden Eagles in the Rainbow Classic. Houston also won its second straight game over Marquette as the Cougars also beat the Golden Eagles in the first round of the 2000 OCG Conference USA Tournament.
