Oscar Giles
Oscar Giles begins his second season tutoring the Cougar defensive line. He joined the Houston staff prior to the 2003 season after spending three seasons at Southern Methodist University. Working with a young defensive line this past season, Giles molded two true freshman, Marquay Love and Eddie McCray, into two of the top defensive linemen in Conference USA. He also tutored Joe Clay, who finished with a team-best seven sacks and was selected Second-Team, All-Conference USA. Love was selected to the Conference USA All-Freshman team despite playing in only seven games. The Cougar defensive line produced 24 sacks a year ago. After joining the SMU staff in the spring of 2000, Giles went on to coach the entire SMU defensive line in 2001, which led the Western Athletic Conference and ranked 22nd nationally in total defense (320.1 yards per game). He was kept on by new Mustang coach Phil Bennett and remained at SMU for the 2002 season. In addition to SMU's team accomplishments, Giles tutored First-Team, All-WAC selection Kevin Aldridge at defensive end in 2001 and coached Chase Scharvda to Second-Team, All-Conference honors in 2000. Giles was a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Texas, in 1999, where he assisted with defensive backs and coached in the Big XII Championship game. He also coached the defensive line and served as a strength and conditioning coach at Southwest Texas State in 1998. Prior to his coaching career, Giles played defensive end and linebacker for the Atlanta Falcons from 1991-93. He went on to play in the Canadian Football League from 1994-97 and helped the Toronto Argonauts win the Grey Cup Championship in 1996. Giles lettered in football at Texas from 1987-90 where he was a three-year starter at defensive end. He was an AP All-Southwest Conference selection and was on numerous publication lists throughout his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. He earned All-SWC honors as a senior when he helped the Longhorns to the SWC championship and an appearance in the 1991 Cotton Bowl. Giles led Texas in sacks for two years and finished with 22 in his career. He was a semifinalist for the Outland Trophy, a two-time GTE Academic All-Conference selection and was awarded UT's Tenacity Award twice during his collegiate career. Giles earned his Bachelor of Science degree in speech communications from Texas in 1991. As a player, Giles appeared in the 1987 Bluebonnet and 1991 Cotton Bowls and made his postseason coaching debut with Texas in the 2000 Cotton Bowl against Arkansas. Giles also was part of the staff that coached the Longhorns to a Big XII South Division Championship that led to the Big XII title game against Nebraska in 1999. Born in Dallas and a native of Palacios, Texas, Giles enjoys spending time with family and fishing. Giles' Coaching Experience
