Former junior-college transfer who stepped in and paid immediate dividends for the Cougars...improved each game and was one of the top Cougar defenders by the end of the year ...is listed as a starter heading into fall after a earning starting role midway through the 2001 season...enjoyed a fantastic spring...could be an honors candidate in senior season...athletic and physical cover man who has ability to blanket a receiver...can also step up and stop the run...has good hands and runs well with the ball after an interception... will see time on the Cougar special teams...2001: Played in all 11 games in first season at Houston...started eight contests, including the final six...finished with 42 total tackles, which was the best total for all UH cornerbacks...also had one tackle for loss and broke up six passes...recorded a season-high nine tackles, including eight solo, against Southern Miss...was named the UH Defensive Player-of-the-Game after his performance against the Golden Eagles...ended the year with eight stops versus nationally-ranked Georgia...averaged four tackles per game during league action...finished the season with 16 tackles in the final three contests...Prior to Houston: Played two seasons at East Mississippi Junior College in Scooba, Miss....named both All-Conference and All-District in the JUCO ranks...runs the 40-yard dash in 4.3 seconds...High School: Prepped at Noxubee County High School in Macon, Mississippi...was selected First-Team All-District twice...was named the team's MVP...also chosen Best Cornerback in the district...ran track and was named Most Improved Runner ...Personal: Born September 1, 1980, in Macon, Miss....son of Charlie Malone, Jr. and Mary Ann Malone of Brooksville, Miss....also recruited by East Tennessee State and Tennessee-Martin...enjoys playing basketball in his spare time...majoring in sociology.
