Thomas McGaughey
Thomas McGaughey returned to his alma mater in 2003 to coach the Couga special teams unit. This season McGaughey will have the added duties of coaching the Cougar cornerbacks. A coach and player at both the amateur and professional levels, McGaughey brings a wealth of football experience to UH where he will continue his successful coaching career. The Cougar special teams boasted a Top 20 kickoff returner (Ricky Wilson, 17th, 26.1 ypr.) and Top 50 punter (Jimmy McClary, 43rd, 42.0 ypc.), kicker (Dustin Bell, 45th, 1.08 field goals/game) and punt returner (Chad McCullar, 46th, 10.1 ypr.) Bell finished the season with a perfect 56-of-56 on extra points and nailed 14 of 19 field goal attempts. McGaughey joined the Houston staff after serving as an assistant special teams coach with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2002. During his tenure with the Chiefs, McGaughey coached future Hall of Famer Morten Andersen and Pro Bowl punt returner Dante Hall as well as standout Gary Stills, whose 36 special team tackles in 2002 broke the Chiefs' all-time single season record. McGaughey was a member of the Cougar football squad from 1991-95 and was special teams captain as a senior. He also lettered in track from 1991-93, while competing in the 110-meter high hurdles. He spent the 1996 and 1997 seasons in the National Football League with the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles under coaches Ray Rhodes and Emmitt Thomas, respectively. McGaughey was also a member of the Barcelona Dragons squad that won the NFL-Europe World Bowl Championship in 1997. McGaughey returned to Houston in 1998 to play for the Houston Thunderbears and also served as a strength and conditioning graduate assistant at UH. From 1998-2001, McGaughey began his coaching career at Willowridge High School in Houston, where he coordinated defensive backs, special teams and the strength and conditioning program. McGaughey returned to the NFL in 2001 as a minority intern with the Kansas City Chiefs and later returned to Houston to serve as a pro scouting assistant for the Texans in their inaugural season. In 2002, he was hired on as the defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator for the NFL-Europe's Scottish Claymores. McGaughey coached some of the league's top performers in kickoff returner James Rooths who averaged 26.8 yards per return, punt returner J.J. Moses (12.3 yards) and kicker Rob Hart, who was a perfect 14-for-14 in the 2002 season. A native of Chicago, Ill., and the son of Sharman Henderson and Thomas McGaughey Sr., he and his wife Erika have three children: Thomas III, Taylor and Trenton.
