Had one of the top performances during the spring of any Cougar player...vaulted from a backup to a starting nod at strong safety heading into the fall...will team with Jermain Woodard and All-America candidate Hanik Milligan to give Houston one of the top combinations at safety in Conference USA...has really progressed in two seasons in the Red and White ...also will be a part of the Cougar special teams...big-time athlete who probably could play on either side of the ball...heavy hitter who seems to make big plays...had a slew of tackles during the annual Spring Game...2001: Played in all 11 games a year ago including a start in the season finale versus nationally-ranked Georgia...responded in first-ever start with an incredible game...racked up a career-high 16 tackles, including nine unassisted...finished the year with 25 total tackles and two fumble recoveries...recovered both fumbles versus Southern Miss...had two tackles on special teams versus Memphis...had at least one tackle in every game except TCU and South Florida...2000: Redshirted after transferring from Blinn Junior College...Prior to Houston: Played two seasons of football at Blinn Junior College in Brenham, Texas...was named all-conference as a sophomore...High School: Played his high school football at one of the state's premier prep football programs, Willowridge High School in southwest Houston...was a two-time selection to the All-District squad...helped lead Willowridge to the state playoffs two straight years...also played soccer and ran track...Personal: Born May 3, 1980, in DeRidder, La....son of Lillie Thomas and Roosevelt Sowells of Houston...also recruited by Kansas State and Nebraska...majoring in sociology.
