Dave Warner enters his second season as the Co-Offensive Coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Houston Cougars. He came to Houston in 2001 from the University of Connecticut, where he spent the previous two years serving as the Offensive Coordinator as well as quarterbacks coach. Prior to joining the UConn coaching staff in January 1999, Warner was a member of Dana Dimel's staff at the University of Wyoming in 1998 as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. The Cowboys had the No. 3 passing attack in the Western Athletic Conference. Warner also also held coaching stints at Bucknell University (1997), the University of Kansas (1988-96), Kent State University (1984-87) and Syracuse University (1982-1983) in 17 years of college coaching. During his nine years as KU's quarterbacks coach, Warner tutored Jayhawk signal caller Chip Hilleary, who was only the second player in Big Eight Conference history to rush for more than 1,000 yards and pass for more than 4,000 yards. Hilleary also set school records for completion percentage (57.6%) and combined passing and rushing touchdowns (49). While at KU, Warner recruited Western Kansas and Houston areas, and was part of the coaching staff that led the Jayhawks to appearances in the 1992 and 1995 Aloha Bowls. Prior to joining the Kansas staff, Warner spent four years as an assistant coach at Kent State. He first tutored the running backs (1984-85) before coaching the quarterbacks from 1986-87. Warner served two years (1982-83) as a graduate assistant at Syracuse under Dick MacPherson. While working as a graduate assistant, he had tryouts with the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles and the USFL's New Jersey Generals. Warner was a three-year letterwinner at quarterback for the Syracuse Orangemen from 1978-81. He was a member of the 1979 squad that defeated McNeese State in the Indpendence Bowl. In 1980, the Orangemen opened the Carrier Dome. As a sophomore, Warner lettered on the Syracuse team which defeated Kansas, 45-27, and then started for the Orangemen team that lost to the Jayhawks, 23-8, the following season. He ended his career having completed 209 of 415 passes for 2,593 yards and remains ranked seventh all-time among Syracuse quarterbacks in passing yards. He was named ECAC Player of the Week twice, and was an All-ECAC honorable mention pick in 1981. Warner received a bachelor's degree in speech communications (1982) and a master's degree in physical education (1984), both from Syracuse. Warner recruits Dallas and the surrounding areas for the Cougars. A native of Lehighton, Pa., he was born on May 10, 1960, and has one daughter, Alexandra, born on August 9, 1990.
