HOUSTON HEAD COACH Tony Levine
Thoughts On The Game
"It was a game of third downs. Offensively we couldn't sustain any drives, we couldn't move the chains, we couldn't stay on the field for third downs, es¬pecially early, and defensively, we couldn't get off the field on third down.
If you look at the time of possession, our defense was on the field three quarters of the game. We did a great job in taking care of the football. We had a critical fumble that was ruled a touchdown but overruled in the third quarter. Then we had a key turnover, which turned into a score, and we had some momentum after the score but we couldn't stop them. We did some things better then we have on the road, but definitely not good enough to beat East Carolina. "
On early offensive struggles
"We weren't efficient on first down. We got into a lot of second-and-longs because we weren't running the ball well enough on first down. We had some dropped passes and couldn't get into a rhythm. Then we got behind and had to play catch up. Our offense is predicated on moving the chains and getting the big strikes when they happen. We want to gain first downs and, to do that, if we get into third down, it needs to be third and short, not third and nine or 10."
EAST CAROLINA HEAD COACH RUFFIN McNEILL
On the Pirates' offense
"Shane (Carden) was able to do it. He's getting more comfortable now with time of possession. The offense did a good job. I thought they did well on third-down conversions. I was really proud of the way they played."
On East Carolina's 48-48 victory over Houston
"I thought we played really well. I'm very proud of them. We stayed with our plan and we played extremely hard."
On the ECU defense
"Houston got a few (touchdowns) in late, but that didn't take away from our defensive plan. This is a good offense. They put up points against everyone. They have a pretty good quarterback and they've got speed, so I was proud of our defense. I was proud of our special teams. They did a great job set¬ting plays up, getting our offense in great field position and our defense."
On the pass break-ups created by East Carolina
"They have a very good offensive line they've given up, maybe 10 sacks on the year, and I thought our team did a good job up front. They did a good job getting up field and putting on the internal pressure. So, I'm very proud of our guys and the way they played."
