HOUSTON HEAD COACH Kevin Sumlin
On how his team stacks up with the rest of the country
"We've played Pac-12, Big-12 and SEC opponents, and our style of playing seems to be working just fine. We've stepped outside of our league and have been fairly successful in playing outside our league. All we can do is win our games and see what happens after that."
On the play of Houston's defense
"Once our defense settled down early, we played well. The disappointing thing was that we extended some of their drives with penalties. We had a turnover really early in the game that really shut us down. They did a good job, and they are a well-coached team. On the road, we have to be smart with how we do things. Our defense played well tonight, and that is the kind of effort that we will need for us to win."
On quarterback Case Keenum
"He has had a record every week for the last three weeks, and that is a big deal. A lot of great players have played this game. In order for all these records to take place, it takes 10 other guys in protection, running after the catch, and catching footballs, so our team is as happy as he is. Our team takes great pride in everybody's individual success because they understand that it is a team effort. That is why they play so hard."
HOUSTON SENIOR QUARTERBACK Case Keenum
On the season he and Houston have had
"I'm having a blast playing football right now. It has been a very special season and we still have a lot of special things out in front of us. It was a great team win tonight, and UAB has some of the most hard-hitting guys that we've played against thus far. They did a great job on a lot of those plays where we get guys in space. They came down and made some big plays, like on that goal-line stand. UAB did a good job against our deep throws, and we had to adjust to it."
On setting the NCAA career passing yardage record
"I don't take any of these things lightly, and I know for a fact that this is a very special honor. I'm not going to fully enjoy it and celebrate it until after the season. Hopefully I will have a lot more to celebrate after the season than just the records."
UAB HEAD COACH NEIL CALLAWAY
"We started the game off playing fast, hard, and with a lot of energy. We made some mistakes early in the kicking game that put our defense in a bind. We played hard until it got out of hand in the end. We blew some coverages late in the game, and we have to work on staying disciplined and doing the right thing. Our offense has to keep working on putting the ball in the end zone."
On UAB's coverage during the game
"In the first half, we played hard and competed hard. The second half we came out and started well, but it started to get out of hand late in the third quarter. We just have to try and stay disciplined throughout the whole game."
On Houston blitzing in the second half
"They brought the blitz, but I have to look at the film to see. A couple were on (Jonathan) Perry, and in those situations, you have to throw to your hot receiver. Some were on the offensive line, and with that being said I know that some of the (running) backs came up and blocked well."
On the defense's goal line stand in the first half
"There was a lot of energy all the way through the first half, and after the stop it was great to see."
