HOUSTON (AP) - Dustin Almond threw for 237 yards and two touchdowns and John Eubanks returned a fumble 27 yards for a score as Southern Mississippi beat Houston 31-10 Saturday night.

Almond's 25-yard TD pass to Antwon Courington put Southern Mississippi (6-3, 5-0 Conference USA) up 17-10 at halftime. Eubanks scored early in the third for a 24-10 lead.

Almond, making his fourth start, was 17-of-26 with no interceptions.

Houston (5-4, 2-3) scored first on a 1-yard touchdown run by Matt Schirmer 4:19 into the game.

Vincent Marshall had four receptions for 70 yards.


Southern Mississippi tied the score on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Almond to Marvin Young, who had four catches for 84 yards.

DaRon Lawrence caught six passes for 85 yards for Southern Mississippi.

Anthony Evans led Houston with 24 carries for 116 yards, and Vincent Marshall had seven receptions for 70 yards.

Houston's Kevin Kolb was 15-of-30 for 158 yards but was intercepted once.

Southern Mississippi's Anthony Harris rushed 21 times for 83 yards and scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
