    2009 HOUSTON COUGARS FOOTBALL POSTGAME NOTES
    2009 Conference USA Championship Game
    #18/18 Houston Cougars (10-3 * 6-2 C-USA) at East Carolina Pirates (9-4 * 1-3 C-USA)

    TEAM NOTES

    ** With 557 yards of total offense (527 pass, 30 rush), the Cougars have recorded at least 500 yards of total offense in 20 games during the last two seasons.

    ** With 557 yards of total offense (527 pass, 30 rush), the Cougars have recorded at least 400 yards of total offense in 24 of their last 25 games.

    ** The Cougars fell to 8-8-1 (.531) against NCAA Division-FBS teams from the state of North Carolina... That includes East Carolina (4-5), North Carolina (1-1), NC State (1-1-1) and Wake Forest (2-0).

    ** Houston fell to 24-12-1 (.662) all-time during the month of December.

    ** Houston fell to 2-1 (.667) all-time when competing on Dec. 5.

    ** Houston did not score in Saturday's third quarter... It marked only the fourth time all season that the Cougars failed to score in a quarter.


    CONFERENCE USA CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES
    ** This was the Cougars' second appearance at the Conference USA Championship Game... Houston won the 2006 C-USA Championship Game with a 34-20 win against Southern Miss at Robertson Stadium in Houston... Houston fell to 1-1 all-time in C-USA Championship games.

    ** Saturday' game was Houston's first appearance at the Conference USA Championship Game on the road.... The Cougars faced Southern Miss in Houston in 2006.

    ** With 56 completions, junior quarterback Case Keenum set a C-USA Championship Game record... His total topped the previous record of 28 by Tulsa's Paul Smith vs. Tulsa in 2007... Keenum topped that record by halftime.

    ** With 527 passing attempts, junior quarterback Case Keenum set a C-USA Championship Game record... His total topped the previous record of 55 by Tulsa's Paul Smith vs. East Carolina in 2007.

     

     

    ** Junior wide receiver James Cleveland's 57-yard touchdown reception from junior quarterback Case Keenum at the 5:00 mark of the first quarter was the longest passing play in C-USA Championship history.

    ** With three touchdown receptions, junior wide receiver James Cleveland set a C-USA Championship Game record... He topped the previous best of two touchdown receptions by Houston's Biren Ealy against Southern Miss in 2006.

    ** With 19 receptions, junior wide receiver James Cleveland set a C-USA Championship Game record... His total topped the previous high of eight catches by Garrett Mills (Tulsa), vs. UCF, in 2005 and by Houston receiver Vincent Marshall, vs. Southern Miss, in 2006.

    ** With 241 receiving yards, junior wide receiver James Cleveland set a C-USA Championship Game record... His total topped the previous best of 152 yards by Tulsa's Garrett Mills against UCF in 2005.

    ** Senior cornerback Brandon Brinkley, senior center Carl Barnett and senior cornerback Carson Blackmon became the first players in school history to compete in multiple Conference USA Championship Games during their careers.

    ** Head coach Kevin Sumlin fell to 1-1 against East Carolina during his career.

    ** Head coach Kevin Sumlin fell to 18-8 (.692) during his collegiate career... That is the best start by any Houston football head coach through his first 26 games.


    INDIVIDUAL NOTES
    ** Junior quarterback Case Keenum joined Texas Tech's Graham Harrell as the only players in NCAA Division I history with multiple 5,000-yard passing seasons during their careers... Keenum now has 4,922 passing yards in 2009 after throwing for 5,020 yards in 2008... Harrell threw for 5,705 yards (2007) and 5,111 yards (2008).

    ** With 527 passing yards on Saturday, junior quarterback Case Keenum now has 5,449 passing yards this season... That ranks as the fourth-highest single-season total in NCAA Division I history... He trails only B.J. Symons (5,833 yards, Texas Tech, 2003); Graham Harrell (5,705 yards, Texas Tech, 2007) and Colt Brennan (5,549 yards, Hawai'i, 2006)

    ** With 527 passing yards, junior quarterback Case Keenum set a Houston single-season record in that category... Keenum now has 5,449 yards in 2009... David Klingler set the previous record with 5,140 yards in 1990.

    ** Junior quarterback Case Keenum has thrown a touchdown pass in his last 29 consecutive games, extending his school record... The previous record was 18 consecutive games by Andre Ware from 1988 to 1991.

    ** With five touchdown passes, junior quarterback Case Keenum recorded the 26th multi-touchdown game of his career... It also was the 23rd time in the last 26 games that he has thrown for at least two touchdowns.

    ** With 527 passing yards, junior quarterback Case Keenum has thrown for more than 300 yards in 25 games during his career... It also was the 25th time in the last 27 games that he has reached the milestone... The Cougars fell to 16-9 (.640) when Keenum reaches 300 yards.

    ** With 527 passing yards, junior quarterback Case Keenum has thrown for at least 400 yards in 12 games during his career. The Cougar improved to 9-3 (.750) during games in which Keenum throws for at least 400 yards.

    ** With 527 passing yards, junior quarterback Case Keenum has thrown for more than 500 yards four times during his career... Houston fell to 2-2 (.500) when Keenum throws for more than 500 yards.

    ** Senior center Carl Barnett and senior cornerback Brandon Brinkley tied a Houston career record by competing in the 52nd games of their careers... They equaled the mark first set by Kenneth Fontenette (2005-08) and Phillip Hunt (2005-08).

    ** With 241 receiving yards, junior wide receiver James Cleveland became only the 10th player in school history to record at least 200 receiving yards in a game.

    ** Junior wide receiver James Cleveland became the first player to record at least 200 receiving yards in a game since Donnie Avery set a school single-game record with 343 yards against Rice on Oct. 13, 2007.

    ** Junior wide receiver James Cleveland's total of 241 receiving yards was the third-highest single-game mark in Houston history. It trailed only Donnie Avery's 346 yards (vs. Rice, Oct. 13, 2007) and Paul Smith's 255 yards (vs. SMU, Oct. 21, 1989).

    ** With 241 receiving yards, junior wide receiver James Cleveland recorded the fifth 100-yard receiving game of his career... The Cougars fell to 3-2 (.600) during games in which Cleveland reached triple digits.

    ** With three touchdown receptions, junior wide receiver James Cleveland recorded the fifth multi-touchdown game of the 2009 season and his career.

    ** With 241 receiving yards, junior wide receiver James Cleveland went past the 1,000-yard mark in 2009... Cleveland now has 1,182 receiving yards in 2009... It was the 11th time in Houston history that a player recorded at least 1,000 receiving yards in a single season.

    ** With 19 receptions, junior wide receiver James Cleveland set a Conference USA single-game mark... His total topped the previous record of 18 by SMU's Emmanuel Sanders against Washington State on Sept. 19, 2009.

    ** With 19 receptions, junior wide receiver James Cleveland tied a Houston single-game record... His total equaled the mark held by Manny Hazard twice (vs. TCU, Nov. 4, 1989; vs. Texas (Nov. 11, 1989).

    ** With 16 receptions, junior wide receiver James Cleveland set a personal best... His total topped his previous high of 14 catches at C-USA rival UTEP on Oct. 3, 2009).

    ** With 241 receiving yards, junior wide receiver James Cleveland set a personal best... His total topped his previous high of 190 yards against C-USA rival Southern Miss on Oct. 31, 2009.


    KEENUM IN THE C-USA RECORDS BOOK
    ** With 527 passing yards, junior quarterback Case Keenum moved into second place in Conference USA career history... Keenum now has 12,734 passing yards during his career... Up next in the C-USA records book is Houston's Kevin Kolb, who threw for 12,964 yards from 2003 to 2006.

    ** With five touchdown passes, junior quarterback Case Keenum set a Conference USA career record... Keenum now has 101 touchdown passes during his career... He moved past Rice's Chase Clement, who threw 99 touchdown passes from 2005 to 2008.

    ** With 56 completions, junior quarterback Case Keenum set a Conference USA career record... Keenum now has 1,052 completions during his career... His total topped the previous mark held by Louisville's Chris Redman, who completed 1,031 passes from 1996 to 1999.

    ** With 75 passing attempts, junior quarterback Case Keenum moved into fourth place in Conference USA history... Keenum now has 1,521 attempts during his career... Up next in the C-USA records book is Cincinnati's Gino Guidugli, who threw 1,556 passes from 2001 to 2004.
