Houston, Texas - University of Houston head coach Art Briles today announced that former Houston Oiler Bubba McDowell has been hired to coach the Cougar safeties. McDowell arrives at Houston after spending the last four seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Southern University.

"He's going to be a great addition, not only to our defensive staff but to our staff as a whole," Briles said. "Besides being a great individual, Bubba is a man who possesses a passion for the game and a genuine care for the student-athletes. He's going to help us continue to win championships. I'm proud that he's a Cougar."

McDowell played strong safety for the Houston Oilers from 1989 to 1994. He received First-Team All-Rookie accolades from Pro Football Weekly and Football News while with the Oilers. In 1994, the team honored McDowell with the "NFL Man of the Year" award. He then spent one season with the Carolina Panthers (1995) and ended his professional career with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1996.

McDowell played cornerback and lettered from 1985 to 1988 at the University of Miami. He also was a starter when the Hurricanes captured the National Championship in 1987. He graduated with a degree in business management in 1989.

McDowell spent the 2003 season with the Green Bay Packers, participating in the NFL Minority Fellowship Coaching Internship Program.

He is married to Candace and the couple has two sons, Trey and Miles.
