Defense Shines in Second Scrimmage

The University of Houston football team got in over 100 plays in just one hour and eight minutes in front of approximately 300 fans Saturday morning at Carl Lewis Field.

The defense came up big on Saturday stopping the offense in regular drive situations. They were called for five sacks, made by George Bamfo, Sammy Brown, Efrem Oliphant, Nathan Ramirez and Austin Wilson. There were two interceptions in the scrimmage both made by junior corner Jeffery Lewis.

The offense was perfect in red zone and goal line scoring with touchdown runs by Michael Hayes and Justin Johnson and a 22-yard field goal made by Matt Hogan.

Sixteen different players caught passes in the scrimmage totaling 30 receptions. Leading the way with four catches was redshirt-freshman DeAndre Perry, followed by senior Tyron Carrier and sophomores Kenneth Bibbins and Darian Lazard with three each.

The offense saw three quarterbacks with sophomore David Piland completing 14 passes at 54 percent, while senior Cotton Turner had 13 completions and junior Crawford Jones with three.

RED AND WHITE SPRING GAME: The annual Red and White Spring Game is scheduled for Saturday, April 9 at 2 p.m. at Robertson Stadium. Admission is free as well as parking. An announcement of the game format will come later in the week.

SCHEDULE CHANGE: The University of Houston is one of the host institution for the 2011 NCAA Final Four. With a practice previously scheduled for Mon., April 4, Coach Sumlin has changed the plans for the final week of spring ball. Next week the Cougars will practice at 4 p.m. on Tues., April 5, Wed., April 6 and Thurs., April 7, all leading up to the Red and White Spring Game on Sat., April 9 at 2 p.m.

YOUTH EXPERIENCE: The Houston football team will host the 2011 Cougar Youth Experience on Sat., April 9 immediately following the Red and White Spring Game on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium. Children aged kindergarten through eighth grade can join the players and coaches for a clinic and autograph session on the field. Admission is free, and pre-registration can be done in advance by calling the Houston football office at 713-743-9388. Children will also be able to register the day of the event.

KIDS CAN PLAY: In addition to the Youth Experience, kids will be able to play in inflatable games in the Cougar Pride Kid Zone from 12-2 p.m. before the spring game on the West side in the Pavilion area.
