Junior quarterback Case Keenum, the 208 Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year, threw for a scrimmage-high 196 yards and two touchdowns on 25-of-36 passing, while junior running back Andre Kohn added 57 yards on nine carries to lead the Cougar rushing attack for the second straight game. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Ronnie Williams and senior wideout Chaz Rodriguez each posted a scrimmage-high eight receptions with junior Kierrie Johnson finishing with a team-high 61 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Redshirt freshman running back Chris Wilson led all players with two rushing touchdowns. Combined, Cougar quarterbacks threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns, while the backs added 57 rushing yards and four touchdowns of their own. The Cougar defense was equally impressive in the team's second scrimmage of the spring season, recording eight sacks, and did not allow a touchdown until the final 30 plays of the scrimmage. The scrimmage also gave the Cougars' young kickers multiple opportunities to work, and those special teams players were up to the challenge. Sophomore Jordan Mannisto and redshirt freshman Matt Hogan combined to hit 7-of-8 field goal attempts with the only miss being a 51-yard effort into the wind on the third possession of the scrimmage. Following the workout, second-year head coach Kevin Sumlin said his staff put the players in different situations throughout the scrimmage and he was pleased with the outcome. "We got a lot of red zone action and were more situational this week," said Sumlin, who guided the Cougars to their first bowl win since 1981. "We were more physical, and we got better this week. We cut down on penalties." Sumlin, who set a record by a UH first-year head coach with eight wins in 2008, also noticed the consistent work by the Cougar defense during the scrimmage. "Our defense was good early," Sumlin said. "We wanted to work in the red zone this week, so that favors the offense. After working on fundamentals during the first week of spring practice, Sumlin and his assistant coaches added more to the team's offensive and defensive plans this week. As his younger players continue to improve and learn the system, Sumlin sounded optimistic for the remaining spring workouts. "We have players who are getting better, and we have players who aren't progressing as we would like, mostly the younger players, but we threw a lot at them this week." Sumlin said. "It will be interesting to see what happens during the next two weeks. The Cougars will take a break from scrimmages next week before wrapping up the spring season with the annual Red-White Game. As the team enjoys Easter week, the Cougars will work out Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The spring season culminates with the Red-White game, scheduled for noon, April 18, on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
