The University of Houston Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the University of Houston Alumni Association have partnered to announce a "Throwback Jersey" game for Homecoming when the Cougars take on Marshall on Oct. 22.
"There is a special feeling that comes with a throwback day and it ties in perfectly with Homecoming festivities," said Director of Athletic Mack Rhoades. "The history of this University and football program needs to be celebrated, and an event like this, brings back the memories and feelings of pride, that many alums look for when they return to campus."
The uniforms will take Cougar fans back to the heyday of the Bill Yeoman football era with traditional colors and logos on the helmets and the uniforms. The jerseys worn during the game will be available in an auction that will be launched in September. Fans can own a piece of history while supporting both the University of Houston Alumni Association and Cougar Pride.
"We could not be more excited to work with athletics to bring a bit of nostalgia back to homecoming this year and hopefully for years to come," said Mike Pede, UHAA President and CEO. "I applaud Mack and Kevin (Sumlin) for their willingness to work together to make this year's homecoming one of the best ever."
The Cougars will be donning the jersey, pant and helmet combination worn more than 40 years ago during the beginning of the Yeoman era and ending with the 1972 season. During time began the Golden Years of UH football, in which the Cougars saw seven winning seasons in 11 years. Cougar squads went to bowl games in 1962, 1969 and `71 and finished in the national Top-25 six times.
UH will wear the home red jersey with white numbers and a navy outline. The jersey has no other markings other than the word Houston, which appears in a slightly arched shape. The helmet design of 1973 was worn by the Cougars from 1966-78 and is solid red with two white stripes along its dome and a white UH one both sides.
