HOUSTON Houston punter Richie Leone was named to the watch list for the Ray Guy Award, awarded annually to the nation’s top punter, The Augusta Sport Council announced Wednesday. The senior, who was a semifinalist for the award in 2011 and 2012, enters the season as the nation’s second-best returning punter, after recording an average of 45.5 yards per punt in 2012, behind just the 45.8-yard average of Kyle Christy from Florida.

Leone’s 2012 average tied a Houston single-season record and led all Conference USA punters en route to garnering First-Team All-Conference USA honors. The Roswell, Ga., native led the league with 20 punts over 50 yards, including four over 60 yards, and a career-long 77-yard punt against Louisiana Tech.

Leone, who also handled kickoff duties for UH with 25 touchbacks on 71 kickoffs, placed 18 of his 60 punts inside the 20-yard line, including nine inside the 10-yard line. Just 21 punts were returned with opponents calling for 24 fair catches and just six punts resulting in touchbacks.

Leone is the second Cougar in as many days to be named to a national award’s watch list as junior center Bryce Redman was named to the Rimington Trophy watch list on Tuesday.
