HOUSTON - He graduated in December 2010 and played his final game in January 2012... but the awards continue to come in for University of Houston quarterback Case Keenum.
Keenum, the Cougars' NCAA record-setting quarterback from 2007 to 2011, was honored Monday as the Conference USA Male Athlete of the Year.
In 2011, Keenum led the Cougars to one of the greatest seasons in school history. The Abilene, Texas, native threw for 5,631 yards and 48 touchdowns to lead the country, while his completion percentage (71.0) and passing efficiency (174.0) ranked among the top-six in the country.
With numbers like that, he received the Sammy Baugh Award, given annually to the nation's top passer. Keenum became only the second two-time winner in the history of the award. He also was honored as the C-USA Most Valuable Player, becoming the first two-time winner after collecting the 2009 honor.
Keenum was recognized as the league's Offensive Player of the Year in 2008 and was named Freshman of the Year in 2007.
The Cougars won each of their first 12 games to open the season and claimed a 30-14 win against No. 23 Penn State during the TicketCity Bowl on Jan. 2. With that performance, he became the first starting quarterback in school history to lead Houston to multiple bowl victories.
Following the season, the Cougars were ranked in the top-15 in both national polls, a first since 1990.
He finished his career as the NCAA career leader in passing yards (19,217), total offense (20,114), touchdown passes (155), total touchdowns (178), completions (1,546) and 300-yard games (39). Keenum owns virtually every NCAA career passing mark and is the first player in NCAA history with three 5,000-yard seasons.
Keenum signed with the Houston Texans to play professionally and will soon be taking part in his first NFL training camp.
UTEP softball player Camilla Carrera was named the league's Female Athlete of the Year after blasting 32 home runs and slugging 1.199 for the season, both good enough for second best in NCAA Division I single-season history.
