HOUSTON, Texas---The 2001 football season officially begins for the Houston Cougars this Sunday, August 5, when the freshmen and newcomers report to camp. Over 30 newcomers, both 2001 signees and walk-ons, will have their first practice on Monday morning beginning at 9:20 a.m. The Cougars will return to the field as a part of the annual two-a-days at 4 p.m. that afternoon. After another day of two-a-days on Tuesday, the newcomers welcome the returning varsity members on Wednesday, August 8th. The annual Cougar Football Media Day is scheduled for Thursday, August 9th, as well as varsity testing in the afternoon. The first day of two-a-days for the entire 2001 squad will commence at 9:20 a.m. on Friday, August 10th. The Cougars will take part in three scrimmages for the season opener versus Rice on Saturday, September 1, at "The Quinn." The first is slated for Tuesday, August 14th, the second on Saturday August 18th and the third and final tune-up is scheduled for Saturday, August 25th. All three scrimmages will be held at Robertson Stadium with actual times released at a later date.
