Fans of the #HTownTakeover will soon be able to eat a delicious meal while giving back to the Houston Football program as BB’s Café debuts The Applewhite, named after first-year Houston Football Head Coach Major Applewhite, on Sept. 5.

Designed in consultation with Applewhite and BB’s owner and founder, UH Track & Field alum Brooks Bassler, the entrée will consist of a combination of catfish, crawfish and shrimp etouffee with garlic bread, white and dirty rice.

Available at all seven BB’s Café locations throughout the Houston area, $2 from every Applewhite entrée will be donated to the 46ers, the restricted giving fund of Houston Football under the Cougar Pride fundraising umbrella.

Applewhite is the second member of the #HTownTakeover to receive the honor of an entrée at BB’s Café as Houston alum and recent Super Bowl champion Elandon Roberts debuted The Elandon in July. The plate which consists of grilled redfish over cilantro rice, one chicken skewer and two stuffed shrimp benefits the Elandon Roberts Foundation that supports heart disease research.

The #HTownTakeover held its first scrimmage of the fall training camp Saturday in a roughly two-hour session inside TDECU Stadium.

The controlled scrimmage was set up as offense vs. defense with a variety of in-game scenarios and first, second and third teams alternating possessions throughout the workout. Quarterbacks were also off limits to tackles and down by the touch.

The Houston defense had the first traditional points of the day on an Ed Oliver had a sack of D’Eriq King in the end zone for a safety.

The day’s first of six offensive touchdowns came through the air as Kyle Postma hit Linell Bonner for an 8-yard strike. Kyle Allen opened up another drive scenario with a 24-yard score down the seam to tight end Romello Brooker.

Postma had his second score of the day when he connected with Jeremy Singleton from six yards out before Terry Mark made a highlight catch in the back corner of the west end zone on a 8-yard touchdown from Bryson Smith.
The offense closed out the day with two rushing TDs in red zone work, a 12-yard sweep from John Leday and a 3-yard run up the middle from Mulbah Car.

Allen led Houston through the air with 148 yards and one touchdown on 16-of-22 passing while King threw for 105 yards on 15-of-22 passing. Postma had two scores and 104 yards on 12-of-15 passing while Smith connected on both of his pass attempts for 11 yards and a score.

Car and Davion Mitchell each had six carries apiece to lead the rushing attack, finishing with 20 and 18 yards, respectively.

Bonner led the offense in receiving, finishing with seven receptions for 50 yards. Cole McGowan and Jeremy Singleton had six receptions each, finishing with 23 and 17 yards, respectively, while Leday led in yards with 67 yards on four receptions.

Defensively, linebacker Austin Robinson led Houston with eight tackles followed by cornerback Javian Smith with five stops. Oliver’s aforementioned safety was one of two sacks on the day as Payton Turner collected the other.

Practice Report | 8/1/2017 - Houston officially turned the page to August with its second practice of fall camp on Tuesday. As was the case on Monday, Houston players hit the field for a two-hour workout in helmets, jerseys and shorts in the second of a five-day acclimation period.

With a focus on the team itself and culture in the program, the Cougars spent the first half of practice focusing on special teams and position group drills. Following a brief respite in Club H2O, the team returned to the field for the second half that culminated in 7-on-7 work and full team work with plenty of action through the air.

Practice Report | 7/31/2017 - The #HTownTakeover opened fall training camp for its 72nd season and its first under new head coach Major Applewhite on Monday morning with a spirited two-hour affair.

The first day's uniform consisted of helmets, jerseys and shorts as the first day of a five-day acclimation period set forth by the NCAA. Designed with player safety in mind, the acclimation period consists of Monday's uniform for the first two days with the addition of shoulder shells for the next two days before moving to full pads on the fifth day of practice.

Those accustomed to camp opening in August should be reminded that recent NCAA legislation eliminated two-a-day practices while still allowing programs to have 29 practices before their first game of the season.

According to the new rule:
"A single day may include a single, three-hour, on-field practice session and a walk-through. During walk-throughs, protective equipment such as helmets and pads can't be worn, and contact is prohibited. Walk-throughs also can't include conditioning activities and, in the Football Championship Subdivision, are limited to two hours in length. Three continuous hours of recovery are required between on-field practice and a walk-through. Activities such as meetings, film review, medical treatment and meals are allowed during recovery time."

Houston will practice through the remainder of the week with the first scrimmage of the fall scheduled for Saturday morning.

In injury news, Applewhite announced Sunday afternoon that senior defensive lineman Jerard Carter (foot), junior offensive lineman Kameron Eloph (back) and sophomore running back Kevrin Justice (ankle) will miss camp and the beginning of the 2017 season with the goal of all three returning midway through the season. As announced in April, Houston will also miss sophomore wide receiver Marquez Stevenson for the season as the Shreveport, La., native suffered a torn ACL during spring practice.
