HOUSTON - Houston Football head coach Tony Levine announced Friday defensive end Gavin Stansbury will join the Houston Football program after signing a financial aid agreement with the University. The senior will be eligible immediately for UH, whose players report for the 2014 season Friday, after completing his degree requirements at Texas A&M.
Named the Aggies' 2013 Defensive MVP, Stansbury started 10 games at defensive end and collected 47 tackles, including 29 solo stops. The Franklin, La., native had three sacks on the year including two vs. Vanderbilt on Oct. 26. Stansbury had a career-high 10 tackles against Auburn on Oct. 19.
Stansbury saw action in 11 games in 2012, finishing the year with nine tackles and one forced fumble while totaling 15 tackles including 3.5 for loss and a sack in 2011. Stansbury also had two forced fumbles in 13 games in 2011 after redshirting in 2010.
Stansbury joins a Houston defensive end group that returns its top six student-athletes from the 2013 season, although it took a hit when senior Eric Braswell suffered a torn ACL during the program's spring session. Between Braswell, senior Trevor Harris, junior Eric Eiland and sophomores Tyus Bowser, Chauntez Jackson and Cameron Malveaux, the group accounted for 130 tackles including 19.5 for a loss and 12 sacks. The group also forced four fumbles, recovered two fumbles and had one interception from Bowser.
