Houston, Texas - For the first time this fall, University of Houston head football coach Kevin Sumlin saw his full squad in action, as the Cougars practiced for over two-and-a-half hours on campus this afternoon.

Even with the looming threat of Tropical Storm Edouard on the horizon, Sumlin put his charges through a spirited workout in the typical heat and humidity of a Texas summer. The Cougars worked on all facets of their game: offense, defense and special teams.

Sumlin hopes to spend the next several days building a mutual acclimation between his staff and his team.

"We're getting through the period where the players are getting to know us, and we are learning about them," said Sumlin. "Now, over the next month we will really get to put some schemes in, (and) the guys are starting to trust us.

"I think as we get going we need to find some leadership. We have to find some players on the perimeter on both sides (of the ball), and hopefully going into our first game, we'll be ready to go."

As mentioned, the Cougars are in a holding pattern for practice tomorrow, with a time and site unknown until the tropical storm reaches the Texas upper coast area. Despite the uncertainty of Tuesday's workout, Sumlin emphatically summed up his feelings after his team's workout today:

"It's finally football season. I am quite happy."
