Cougars Report, Set For First Workout Tomorrow
Aug. 6, 2009
HOUSTON - With over 100 players reporting for duty, the University of Houston officially began the 2009 season today with a two-and-a-half hour team meeting in the Carl Lewis Auditorium in the Athletics/Alumni Center.
After the annual Media and Picture Day set for tomorrow morning, the Cougars hit the practice fields for the first time this season with a scheduled workout at 5:30 pm on the UH Practice Fields. UH football practices are closed to the general public.
UH head coach Kevin Sumlin, who is in his second season guiding the UH football team and is fresh off an impressive 8-5 record last season, emphasized to his team the importance of a good fall camp and playing each game one at a time.
"We talked from the beginning that our primary goal is to win the West Division of Conference USA," Sumlin said. "Really other than that there is not much else you can do except win the games on your schedule. If you win the West, you don't even know who you are playing until the week of the championship."
The Cougars will practice every day between now and the season opener on September 5 against Northwestern State at Robertson Stadium, taking only Sundays off along the way.
