Practice Continues, Vets Report Tomorrow
HOUSTON -- Fall practice continued for the University of Houston Cougars today with two-a-days in full swing in the Texas summer. The Cougar newcomers worked out in the morning and in the afternoon after spending Sunday afternoon testing in the weight room.
It was the work in the weight room that gave UH Head Dana Dimel a glimpse of what he can expect from some of the new Cougars.
"From yesterday's testing we found there are four or five guys that have the physical tools and the physical maturity that will allow them to step and play for us," said Dimel. "Today we brought them out and really tried to specify on those guys and accelerate them so they can help us right away."
Tomorrow the Houston veterans report to camp, as the Cougar lettermen participate in physical, health tests and equipment issuance. The entire squad will have shuttle testing on Wednesday morning followed by the annual Picture Day at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
Dimel is ready for full squad workouts, which begin on Thursday morning.
"It is going to be good to get every one in," commented Dimel. "We'll go through the big shuttle run we have Wednesday morning, so they can get introduced to what that is all about. That will become tradition here, and guys will dread that day.
"Then of course, we start full practices on Thursday, and there is plenty of competition. It will be interesting for all of us."
The Cougars return almost 50 lettermen from last year's 7-4 squad,
including six starters on offense and three of defense. Senior place
kicker Mike Clark is a two-way letterman as the Cougars kicker and punter.
