HOUSTON - Houston junior wide receiver Deontay Greenberry was named to the preseason watch list for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, announced Wednesday at the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce East Texas Kickoff Luncheon.
Greenberry ranks sixth nationally among returning players with 1,202 receiving yards and 11 touchdown receptions in 2013. Named Dave Campbell’s 2014 Preseason Best Receiver in the State of Texas, Greenberry was named to The American’s first team last season after leading Houston with 82 receptions for 1,202 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Greenberry’s 1,202 yards led The American and his 11 touchdowns were second in the league despite missing the entire SMU game and leaving the Louisville contest on the game’s first series. He was the 17th player in program history to hit the 1,000-yard receiving mark in the season and his 1,202 yards ranked 10th on the UH single-season receiving yards chart. Greenberry finished the year with over 100 yards receiving in five games, a number that ranked second in The American.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, announced in 2012 by the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler, recognizes the top offensive player in FBS football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.
The watch list announced Wednesday will be narrowed to up to 16 semifinalists in November and then up to four finalists in December. They will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and the previous winner. The finalists will travel to Tyler, Texas for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Awards Banquet scheduled for Jan. 14, 2015.
