Houston Fans Encouraged to Arrive Early Friday

Aug. 27, 2014

HOUSTON - Fans attending the opening of TDECU Stadium at 8 p.m., Friday are encouraged to arrive early for several promotional giveaways and a special on-field ribbon cutting ceremony. The night begins with Cougar Walk at approximately 6 p.m. at Shasta Square on Cullen Boulevard, just east of the stadium. Fans are encouraged to greet the Cougars as they make the walk from their drop off zone to inside the stadium at ICON Gate 2.

Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Friday for fans to take advantage of the giveaways for the first Houston Football game in the new home of the Cougars.

Houston Athletics is encouraging all fans to wear RED as the official theme is “Welcome Home - Red Out”.
The first 5,000 University of Houston students who enter the gates will walk away with t-shirts commemorating the inaugural game, presented by both Coca Cola and Wells Fargo.

Fans of all ages can take advantage of arriving early to cheer on the Cougars by receiving jersey rally towels, presented by AT&T to the first 1,000 through the gates, and Cougar Paw fans, presented by TDECU, for the first 40,000. The first 2,500 fans will receive UH cell phone pockets presented by Memorial Hermann, and 20,000 commemorative game tickets will be handed out by Houston Athletics.

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony of TDECU Stadium will take place on John O’Quinn Field beginning at 7:37 p.m., Friday with dignitaries and supporters of the University in Houston in attendance to officially open the new facility.

If they aren’t already, fans will want to be in their seats at 7:42 p.m, as an ultra-high resolution 360-degree fan photo will be taken. The interactive photo - presented by TDECU and powered by Blakeway Worldwide Panoramas - will allow Houston Cougars fans to find and tag themselves, share with friends, win cool prizes and celebrate the game. The image will be over 26 billion pixels in size, making it the largest photograph ever taken at a Houston Athletics event. The Houston Cougars Gigapixel will be available shortly after the event. At 7:45 p.m., the Spirit of Houston will make its first official entrance, a grand entrance at that, into TDECU Stadium for its pregame show including the national anthem and a moment to honor fallen Coogs at 7:52 p.m. Houston fans will not want to miss the singing of the alma mater at 7:55 p.m., and the 2014 Houston Football intro video at 7:56 p.m.

The Houston team will enter John O’Quinn Field at 7:57 p.m. with UTSA taking the field at 7:58 p.m. The first coin flip of TDECU Stadium is scheduled to occur at 7:59 p.m. and the game will officially kickoff to a nationally televised crowd at 8:02 p.m.

Fans are reminded of Houston Athletics' Shasta Square, which provides an exciting pregame destination for fans. The pregame zone is located on the east end of TDECU Stadium with easy access to the Gate 1 and the Icon Gate 2, located on the northeast and southeast corners of the stadium, respectively.

Located on Cullen Blvd., between Holman Street and Cougar Place Drive, Shasta Square features a wide variety of engaging pregame experiences including the official UH Student Tailgate area, IMG sponsor activation zone, local food trucks, a Beer Garden, Memorial Hermann Kids Zone, Little Coogs tailgate, Houston Athletics Letterwinners ("H" Association & UHCAA) tailgate and Shasta Square Group Tailgate package area. The area will open four hours prior to kickoff for each of Houston's seven home games.

Groups looking for the optimal, stress-free tailgating experience should look no further as Houston Athletics and corporate sponsor Aztec Tents and Events, along with campus concessionaire UH Sports & Entertainment, can provide full tailgate rental packages, including tents, tables, chairs, game tickets and catering within Shasta Square. Full information on Shasta Square and tailgate package rentals can be found here.

Fans can also join the UHAA for its Party on the Plaza before each home game in front of the Athletics/Alumni Center. Starting three hours before game time (four hours before on Friday) and ending 45 minutes prior to kickoff, the Party on the Plaza features live music, food and drinks in a festive atmosphere. Full information on the Party on the Plaza can be found here.

Tailgating is encouraged as fans take advantage of several areas of green space and in parking lots while following the same policies set in place at Robertson Stadium. Full policies can be found here while information on parking and directions can be found here.
