HOUSTON – On the day of their final collegiate season opener, Houston head coach Tony Levine announced four senior walk-ons have been placed on scholarship Saturday. Ameen Behbahani, Chris Cermin, Crawford Jones and Braxton Welford all earned the honor after spending their previous seasons as walk-ons for the Houston program.
“As a former walk-on collegiate athlete myself, I know the hard work and sacrifice these four have made on a daily basis the past few years,” said Levine, a walk-on wide receiver at Minnesota. “These four represent the standards of our program and have done a great job both on the field and in the classroom.”
A defensive tackle, Behbahhani has played in 34 games the last three years recording 27 tackles including 1.5 sacks in 2009. Cermin, a defensive back from Katy, Texas, has seen action in 13 games in his career and enters Saturday night’s season opener listed as Houston’s starting strong safety.
Jones has played in 19 games the last two seasons as a backup quarterback and a part-time holder on Houston kicks. After transferring from San Diego Mesa College, Welford made his mark in 2011 as a reserve running back and special teams standout. The San Diego native had 21 carries for 83 yards on the season along with a touchdown against Georgia State.
The four open their final season of collegiate action and the final season of Robertson Stadium Saturday at 7 p.m. against Texas State.
