HOUSTON - There are plenty of reasons to come and join the Cougars as they open the 2009 football season against Northwestern State on Saturday, but the University of Houston Athletics Department has several promotions planned to enhance the fans experience.

Larry Gatlin, country music singer and UH alum, will be singing the national anthem and performing during halftime. During his time here, Gatlin played wide receiver for UH football. He is best-known for teaming up with his brothers in the late 1970s, where they became one of country music's most successful acts of the 1970s and 1980s, known as Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin Brothers.

The game, sponsored by the U.S. Army, will kick off the Pulse of the Pride campaign. Pulse of the Pride represents all of Houston Athletics: its fans, teams, coaches, donors, alumni, staff and students. The first 1000 students to arrive will receive official Pulse of the Pride shirts. For more information on becoming the pulse visit PulseofthePride.com.

The season opener will also include a reunion of the 1984 football team. The 1984 Cougars ended their season with a winning record of 7-5 and won a Southwest Conference championship, earning a bid to the Cotton Bowl.
